Well, we’ve nearly made it - there's just a few days to go!

My thoughts are with those in hospitality and retail - and those who have to brave the crowds to get the last bits of shopping done this week.

Along with the shopping and stressing I’ve been ticking off the list of traditional essentials for this time of year. I’ve made the Christmas cake - and am getting in early with the warnings that my oven is on its last legs so the cake may not be up to scratch. I’ve watched 'It’s A Wonderful Life' for the umpteenth year in a row and have signed up for brandy butter making duty this weekend too.

A tradition that’s sort of crept up on me in recent years is having some mulled wine over the festive season. As a devoted hot toddy fan I’ve always liked a glass of mulled wine too and my brother can always be counted on to bring a bottle of red and the wee packet of ready-to-go sachets of spices. Now it’s become a bit of a must-have, especially when settling down to watch a Christmas film. This year I’m going to ditch the sachets and give the real deal a try, thanks to our exclusive recipe below from the Allen family at Ballymaloe House.

If you’re of a similar mind but would rather not have the alcohol, we have a great recipe from Food&Wine contributor Oisin Davis that brings all the festive feels without the booze - or try the mulled apple juice instead (with optional whiskey).

Whatever your own festive traditions look like we hope you and yours have a safe and happy Christmas.
